* Twenty eight percent of idling means that 28% of the travel time of an average driver is spent in idling mode.

IN 2014, NEW RESEARCH ON IDLING TIME REVEALED THAT CITY** DRIVERS AROUND THE WORLD ARE SPENDING ON AVERAGE UP TO A THIRD OF THEIR JOURNEY IDLING***

**City: The circular shape focused on inner city build-up areas, by avoiding the inclusion of outer city motorway systems, wherever possible.
***New research on idling time was conducted for 26 out of 78 cities in the 2014 Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START Index.

WHAT HAS CHANGED WITH TODAY'S DRIVING?

More people live in cities than ever before, and increasingly busy driving became a feature of life. On every single trip we make, we encounter situations on the road that make us stop, wait, and start again. Research shows that even a normal driver makes as many as 18000 stop-starts per year. Stop-start driving means more accelerations and decelerations, but also extended periods of idling, when loads on some critical engine parts are at their highest. That’s why stop-start driving can create microscopic wear of your critical engine parts.

WHAT IS CASTROL MAGNATEC STOP-START INDEX?

The 2014 Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START Index examined traffic conditions in 78 key cities and regions around the globe, including China, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The index helps us to understand more about the city driving patterns and gives implications of stop start on your engine.

HOW IS CASTROL MAGNATEC STOP-START INDEX CALCULATED?

The Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START Index uses data shared anonymously on an opt-in basis of TomTom navigation users around the world. With millions of TomTom GPS navigation devices already in use, and growing every day, the historical traffic information collected in this way gives valuable insight into the traffic situation on the road network throughout the day.

Using a specially devised algorithm, we are able to calculate the number of stops and starts encountered during a trip. By applying this calculation to thousands of users and journeys, we can accurately measure the stop-start average per kilometre within defined city limits. By simply multiplying this number by the average distance driven per year, we get the final Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START Index.
